Golf - a dangerous sport?
Two cases involving accidents at golf clubs have been reported recently.
Branston Golf and Country Club were fined £5,000 by magistrates after Rachel Davis was hit in the face by a stray ball as she walked along a path close to the driving range, having completed nine holes. There were no signs warning of being struck by golf balls and the fence around the driving range was damaged. Mrs Davis also received compensation from the club for her injuries which included a suspected facial fracture.
In a separate case, Anthony Phee was hit by a stray ball at Niddry Castle Golf Club in West Lothian and lost his eye as a result. James Gordon hit a shot from the 18th tee as Mr Phee was walking between holes. Damages were agreed at £397,000. Lord Brailsford at the Court of Session in Edinburgh found the club 30% liable with Mr Gordon being 70% liable. He said a golfer of Mr Gordon's experience should have been aware of the risk his shot posed to Mr Phee but added that the club failed in its duty to provide proper signs.
